Since 1970, the Southern Demographic Association has hosted an annual meeting each fall, usually in October. The SDA meeting provides a friendly venue for people to present academic and applied demographic research, to discuss and learn about population issues, and to meet others with common interests.

2022 Annual Meeting

The 2022 Southern Demographic Association annual meeting will be held October 17-19 in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the Knoxville Crown Plaza. We are excited to be in person again!

Meeting Registration and Calendar Year 2023 Membership

Registration for the 2022 SDA meeting will open no later than July 1.

Conference Hotel

The conference hotel is the Crowne Plaza Knoxville Downtown University. Rates are $145-$160 per night depending on type and number of beds.

  • Up to September 17 to book at the SDA rate first click this link to open the webpage.  At the top of the hotel page, click the red "Book Now" button on the upper right corner of the window.  You will drop down to the "Check In" and "Check Out" dates.  Enter your check in dates:  Check in Monday 10/17 or later, and check out Thursday 10/20 or earlier.  If you want to come in on dates outside of these dates, you need to call the hotel directly at (865) 522-2600 and ask for "in house" reservations because the dates will not be in the block that is on line. 
  • After September 17 you must call the hotel at (865) 522-2600 and ask for “in house" reservations.

Annual Meeting October 17-19, 2022

Knoxville, Tennessee

We invite submissions of 250-word abstracts for individual research papers and/or posters in applied or academic demography, economics, geography, sociology, public health, psychology, and epidemiology. Also welcome are proposals for thematic sessions or panel discussions.

During the meeting, SDA will announce the 2022 winners of three awards:

  • E. Walter Terrie Award for the best paper presented at the SDA Annual Meeting on an applied topic, especially one relating to state and local demography Send nominations to Jason Devine (
