Since 1970, the Southern Demographic Association has hosted an annual meeting each fall, usually in October. The SDA meeting provides a friendly venue for people to present academic and applied demographic research, to discuss and learn about population issues, and to meet others with common interests.

2022 Annual Meeting

The 2022 Southern Demographic Association annual meeting was held October 17-19 in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the Knoxville Crown Plaza.

For those interested in US Census Microdata:

  • Census Microdata Access Tool (Booth): Visit the U.S. Census Bureau’s table near the registration desk. Data.census.gov experts will be ready to provide live demos, answer questions, and hear your feedback on how to improve the data platform.
  • Census Microdata Access Tool (Workshop): Many users know how to search for pre-made tables on data.census.gov, but did you know you can also use the site to create custom tables? Join a session from 9-10 on Tuesday (same time as Session Period I) to learn how to create custom tables using the U.S. Census Bureau’s Microdata Access Tool (MDAT) on data.census.gov. You will learn how to select and define variables, customize your table view, and download the data.

(Charles Nam, Cynthia Taeuber, Peter Morrison, Jeffrey Evans, and Dudley Poston)

This session addressed the early days of SDA (known then as SRDG – Southern Regional Demographic Group), including why and how it originated in Oak Ridge in 1970. We also remembered those SRDG/SDA former presidents who are now deceased. The session included on its panel a bunch of old-time members, who will reminisce about the early days of the SRDG.
